Nestled between the mountains and the sea on Hokkaido’s rugged west coast, the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery is a must-visit for whisky lovers and anyone interested in Japan’s proud craft traditions. Located in the coastal town of Yoichi, just under an hour and a half from central Sapporo, this historic distillery offers a unique glimpse into the birthplace of Japanese whisky.
The distillery was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, known as the father of Japanese whisky. After studying the art of whisky-making in Scotland, Taketsuru returned to Japan determined to recreate authentic Scotch-style whisky using local ingredients and methods. He chose Yoichi for its cool climate, clean air, and access to high-quality water—conditions similar to those found in Scotland.
Today, the distillery remains in operation and is one of two major Nikka distilleries in Japan. Visitors can explore parts of the original stone buildings, see the traditional coal-fired stills still used in production, and learn about the fascinating story of Taketsuru and his Scottish wife, Rita, who together helped lay the foundations of Japan’s whisky industry.
The self-guided tour allows you to wander through a number of historic buildings and exhibits, including a small museum dedicated to Taketsuru’s life and legacy. English signage is available throughout most of the site, and printed materials are usually provided for international guests. You’ll also find displays about the whisky-making process, from malting and fermentation to distillation and aging.
Of course, the highlight of any visit is the tasting room, where visitors can sample a selection of Nikka whiskies, including Yoichi Single Malt. There is also a shop on-site with exclusive bottles and gift sets that make great souvenirs.
The on-site restaurant and café serve light meals and offer a great chance to try whisky-paired dishes or enjoy local Yoichi produce.
