Hokkaido Jingu Shrine

Hokkaido Jingu (also written as Hokkaido Shrine) is the most significant Shinto shrine in Sapporo and one of Hokkaido’s most important spiritual sites. Located on the edge of the picturesque Maruyama Park, this grand shrine is surrounded by dense forest and beautifully landscaped grounds, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city.

Hokkaido Jingu Shrine

Established in 1869 during the early development of Hokkaido as a part of modern Japan, Hokkaido Jingu was built to enshrine three major Shinto deities, including Ōkunitama-no-Kami, the protector of Hokkaido. Later, the spirit of Emperor Meiji was also enshrined here, further enhancing its cultural and historical significance.

The shrine buildings are an excellent example of traditional Japanese architecture, with large wooden torii gates welcoming visitors into the sacred precinct. The vast grounds come alive during cherry blossom season, when locals flock to the park and shrine for hanami (flower viewing) picnics under the blooming sakura trees. Another popular time to visit is during Hatsumode, the New Year’s pilgrimage, when thousands come to pray for health, happiness, and good fortune.

Also adjacent to the shrine is the Maruyama Zoo, one of Japan’s oldest zoos, home to a variety of animals including polar bears, red pandas, and native Japanese species. It’s a great stop for families or those interested in wildlife.
