Fushimi Inari Shrine, located in southern Kyoto, is one of Japan’s most iconic and visited Shinto shrines. Famous for its thousands of vermillion torii gates, the shrine offers a unique and breathtaking experience as visitors walk through the scenic trails that wind up Mount Inari.
Founded in 711 AD, Fushimi Inari Shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, prosperity, and business. Throughout Japan, there are approximately 30,000 Inari shrines, but Fushimi Inari is the head shrine, making it the most important and visited one. The shrine complex includes several sub-shrines, statues, and other religious structures, each with its own unique charm and history.
The Path of a Thousand Torii Gates
The highlight of Fushimi Inari Shrine is undoubtedly the Senbon Torii, or “thousands of torii gates,” which form vibrant tunnels along the paths. These gates, donated by individuals and businesses, bear the names of their donors inscribed on them. The path through the gates leads up to the sacred Mount Inari, standing at 233 meters. The hike to the summit takes about 2-3 hours, passing smaller shrines and offering stunning views of Kyoto along the way.
Kitsune Statues
Throughout the shrine, visitors will notice numerous statues of kitsune (foxes), which are regarded as the messengers of Inari. These fox statues often hold a key in their mouths, symbolising the keys to the rice granaries, further emphasising Inari’s connection to rice and prosperity.
Seasonal Beauty
Fushimi Inari Shrine is a year-round destination, offering different charms with each season. The lush greenery of spring and summer, the vibrant autumn leaves, and the serene snowscapes of winter all provide unique and picturesque experiences for visitors.
Visiting Tips
The shrine is open 24 hours a day, and admission is free, making it an excellent option for an early morning or late evening visit to avoid the crowds. The main shrine buildings at the base of the mountain are illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere.
