Hiroshima’s Asa Zoological Park is one of Japan’s best zoos, offering a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Nestled in the scenic Asa district, the zoo spans over 25 hectares and is home to thousands of animals, including both native Japanese species and exotic creatures from around the world.
Opened in 1971, Asa Zoo has been a favourite destination for families, animal lovers, and tourists looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The zoo features a wide range of animals, from majestic lions, tigers, and elephants to unique Japanese wildlife such as tanuki (raccoon dogs) and sika deer.
One of its most beloved residents is the red panda, also known as the lesser panda or Firefox. With its distinctive raccoon-like face and playful nature, the red panda is a major drawcard for visitors. The zoo also houses giraffes, zebras, monkeys, penguins, and even rare species like the Japanese giant salamander, which is native to Hiroshima’s rivers.
Beyond animal exhibits, Asa Zoo offers several interactive and family-friendly experiences. The petting zoo is a hit among children, allowing them to get up close with friendly goats, sheep, and rabbits. There’s also a play park featuring slides, climbing areas, and other recreational equipment that keeps younger visitors entertained.
If you need a break, the zoo has two cafés where you can enjoy light snacks and drinks. Picnic areas are also available, as well as several vending machines, making it a great spot for a relaxing day out with family or friends.
