Located on the corner of Kojunsha Dori and Ginza Dori is Japan’s oldest beer hall, Ginza Lion. Established in 1899, the Ginza Lion Beer Hall is steeped in history and offers a unique blend of historical charm, delectable food, and an impressive selection of beers. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, the Ginza Lion Beer Hall promises an unforgettable experience.
Opened by Sapporo Breweries, one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious beer producers. The beer hall has witnessed over a century of Tokyo’s evolution, surviving natural disasters and wartime challenges. Deceptively from the outside the building looks like many other buildings around Ginza, but the moment you step into the Ginza Lion Beer Hall you are transported back to the 1930s where the grand, high-ceilinged art deco interiors remind you of a German beer hall and not a beer hall in Tokyo. Evoking an old-world charm, the walls are adorned with vintage decor and intricate tile work, while a huge glass mosaic artwork above the bar depicts ladies collecting the barley for the beer. The current Ginza Lion at Ginza 7 Chome dates back to 1934 and is recognized a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The building itself contains 6 floors with several restaurants and a large banquet space spread across the venue, each maintaining their art deco charm while being serviced by modern kitchen facilities.
As you’d expect from a historic beer hall, the Ginza Lion offers an extensive selection of beers to satisfy every palate. The highlight, of course, is the range of Sapporo beers, including the classic Sapporo Draft and the exclusive Ginza Lion Beer Hall’s own brews. Beer lovers can also enjoy seasonal and limited-edition offerings that showcase Japan’s rich brewing traditions. Each beer is served with the utmost care, ensuring the perfect temperature and frothy head for an optimal drinking experience.
The Ginza Lion Beer Hall pairs its exceptional beers with a diverse food menu that combines Western and Japanese culinary influences. Classic beer hall fare such as sausages, schnitzels, and hearty stews are featured alongside Japanese favorites like karaage (fried chicken) and yakitori (grilled skewers). The menu also includes fresh salads, seafood dishes, and delectable desserts, ensuring there’s something to please every guest. Each dish is crafted to complement the beer selection, enhancing the overall dining experience.
