C&C Curry Shops are another of example of the dozens of franchises and chains dedicated to selling curries throughout Japan. Curry has become one of the great comfort foods for the Japanese with their curry being much sweeter and more gravy like than that of Indian or South East Asian curries. The Japanese curry is also not as hot, with the mild (Chukara) having little heat and the hot (karakuchi) having no where near the heat as other curries. Where the curries lack in heat, they certainly make up with in flavour, the curries are rich, complex and very tasty.
Like most things in Japan, curry is served with a distinct Japanese style and in a distinct Japanese way. The curry usually consists of a large pile of rice at one end of the dish a large scoop of curry at the other and then topped with some form of protein often pork or chicken that is usually crumbed and deep fried. Then there are Japanese pickles or a small amount of salad.
Many of the C&C Curry Shops are vending machine restaurants, you will find over 20 in Tokyo alone. Here you select and pay for your curry on a vending machine before handing the receipts to a staff member arranges for the meal to be served to you. The stores usually have large pictures on the window so you can work out what you want before tackling the easy to use vending machines.
