Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre

The Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre is a large venue located in Tokyo’s Ginza district, just a few blocks south of the more famous Kabukiza Theatre.

Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre
Like Kabukiza, Shinbashi Enbujo is home to the traditional Japanese performance art of Kabuki. However, unlike Kabukiza, which strictly adheres to the traditional form of Kabuki that has remained largely unchanged since its origins in the early 1600s, Shinbashi Enbujo also showcases more modern plays, Super Kabuki, and fresh talent.

Kabuki is known for its all-male cast, elaborate costumes, heavy makeup, and sometimes day-long performances. Super Kabuki was developed as an attempt to modernise the art form by introducing special effects and adapting the sometimes centuries-old storylines. While some purists are not fond of Super Kabuki, audiences love it, and its popularity has helped increase attendance at performances.

Originally built in 1925, Shinbashi Enbujo was destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt. The theatre underwent another reconstruction in 1982, maintaining the architectural style of the previous building with an almost Art Deco brick façade. The complex also houses restaurants, lunch-box shops, and a souvenir store.

Shinbashi Enbujo is just a three-minute walk from Higashi-Ginza Subway Station on the Hibiya (H09) or Asakusa (A11) Line, accessible via Exit 6.
