When you see a giant crab outside a restaurant, you think of fresh seafood; if you see a bull, you think of steak. So, what comes to mind when you see a giant gorilla? Curry, of course! Go Go Curry is one of the leading curry cafés in Japan, easily recognised by the large gorilla logo adorning their shopfronts.
The Go Go Curry story began in Ishikawa Prefecture, located roughly level with Tokyo but on the western coast of Honshu, in the city of Kanazawa, known for its Kenroku-en Garden and Kanazawa Castle.
Go Go Curry claims their curry undergoes 55 processes, stews for 55 minutes, and then matures for a further 55 hours to develop its rich, delicious flavour. The number 55 is a tribute to local baseball legend Hideki Matsui, who wore the number 55. The company has ambitious plans to open 555 stores in 55 countries and currently operates around 75 stores in Japan, as well as locations in Brazil and the USA, including a store in Times Square. There are also several other Go Go Curry locations in New York and along the East Coast.
The curry has a distinct black colour and is not only delicious but also an affordable and popular meal. The traditional dish includes rice, shredded cabbage, and a crispy, crumbed pork cutlet, but the extensive menu offers many options, including curries with chicken, shrimp, sausages, and a variety of tasty toppings.
One of their signature items is for those with a big appetite: the World Champion Curry. This massive 2,550 Yen dish includes sausages, shrimp, and both chicken and pork schnitzel, all atop a large mound of curry sauce.
